Spotlight | Damaris Mia Photography

First, off let’s get down and personal. =)

Where are you from? How old are you?
I’m a 23 year old residing in the beautiful Orange County, California

What’s your favorite thing to do in your freetime??
A lot of things 🙂 Hang out with my husband, family, and friends. Read. Play soccer when I can. Cook. Exercise. Eat. A lot.

What’s your favorite color?
I don’t have a favorite color. But I really like the color red. And yellow. And pink. And royal purple. And, and, and…. 🙂

Meet Damaris!!

What’s your favorite food?
Oh my goodness. This is hard. I LOVE food. I love anything with chicken. I love shrimp & calamari. Would hot cheetos be considered “food”? I love soups. I love anything spicy. REALLY spicy.

How long have you been married?
9 months 🙂

How did you meet?
Oh boy.. haha you can read all about it here: http://www.damarismiablog.com/2010/01/4-years-memoir.html

Aaannd who was your wedding photographer?
My awesome cousin, Tibi.

How did you get into the field of photography?
Photography was something I kind of fell into. I didn’t grow up knowing that I will one day become a photographer or even wanting to become a photographer. I actually wanted to become many other things like a teacher, oceanographer, violinist, CIA secret agent.. the list goes on. Basically, I wanted to try something new and ended up falling in love with it. I have always been a creative person and wanted something that would give me the freedom to do what I want, when I want. Photography gives me just that and I love it.

What about photography do you love the most?
Oh boy. What don’t I love about photography? I love creating images. I love meeting new people and forming friendships. I’m infatuated with photography at the moment.. can you tell? We’re still in our “honeymoon phase”. Ask me again in like another year and we’ll see if my answer has changed 😉

If you could collaborate/shoot with anyone, who it would be?
I would love to collaborate with Mike Colon or Jasmine Star

What defines you as a photographer?
Who I am as a person, not just a photographer. The images I create and strive to create.

While we’re on the subject, what defines you as a person?
My husband. My family. My faith. The values I hold in life.

When did you get your first camera?
May 2009

What was your first camera??
Canon Rebel XS

Do you prefer studio lighting or natural lighting?
Natural lighting all the way!

What were you doing before you decided to become a photographer?
I was a student. Currently taking a break from school to pursue other options (photography).

Is photography your full time career, or do you do something else as well?
I would love to turn my passion for photography into a full-time career

How long have you been a photographer?
I’ve been shooting since May 2009 but it wasn’t until late summer that I realized that I wanted to become a photographer.

When did you accept your first paid gig, and what did it feel like?
This is an interesting question, haha. I recently shot an event that I was going to do for free but ended up getting paid anyway as a “Thank You”. I’m second-shooting at a wedding in Malibu this weekend which I’m getting paid for and I will be shooting my first actual paid gig next weekend (e-session). So to answer your question, we’ll see! I’m a little nervous since it is a paid gig, but feeling pretty good about it because it’s with people I know 🙂

What is your photography style?
I would describe my photography style as fresh and clean. I do like to throw in a little fashion with the posing and what not every now and then. But overall, I would say it’s fresh and clean. I don’t like over-editing. When editing, I keep it simple and just do a little bit of editing that enhances the image. My images are very close to what I get inside the camera- just enhanced 🙂 I like to use the light that is available to me. I love natural light. I heart the sun 🙂

What/who inspired you to become a photographer?
I got my Canon Rebel just a few weeks before a trip to Hawaii. At the time, I was kind of playing with the idea of becoming a photographer. It wasn’t until I started snapping some photos of Hawaii that I really just fell in love. I loved what I was able to create with my camera. Nature photography is still number one on my list of things I like to shoot (I get it from my father). Like, seriously.. if National Geographic offered me a job right now, I would take it in a heartbeat. To be able to photograph the wonderful things that the good Lord above created, *sigh*… dream come true. However, nothing beats capturing those timeless moments on camera 🙂

Do you have a favorite photographer?
If so, who?
I don’t have a favorite photographer. I don’t even have a favorite color. Haha… Sounds strange, doesn’t it? It’s like asking a doctor who their favorite doctor is. Well, maybe they have a favorite. I don’t know. But, I definitely have photographers I admire and look up to. Jasmine Star was the first well-known and accomplished photographers I heard about when I first got into photography. I definitely admire her. Mike Colon is another photographer I admire. I respect and appreciate who they are and what they do.

What are your goals as a photographer?
To make my clients cry happy tears 🙂 haha.. I have so many. I want to create images that inspire others. I want to do things that inspire others. I want to be inspiring.

What type of photographer are you?
I’m a portrait and nature photographer but am making my way into wedding photography. So y’all better watch out! 😉

You do a lot of engagements; do you plan on getting into weddings as well?
Definitely! I have several weddings lined up this year where I will be second-shooting. I booked my first own wedding of 2011. Pretty excited about that 🙂

What attracted you to engagements/weddings?
Every time I look through my wedding album, I cry (happy tears). I cry because my brother walked me down the aisle dressed in his military uniform. I cry because I have pictures of my parents, crying. I am able to relive those moments by looking at those images and it gives me such a lovely feeling inside. A feeling I want others to have when they look at the images I create for them.

If you could change one thing about your photographic style, skills, equipment, etc., what would it be and why?
I wouldn’t change anything! I love my style, my equipment, everything. However, it wouldn’t hurt to have a few more lenses! 😉 But I’m getting there 🙂

What is in your camera bag?
Canon 7D, 50mm f/1.8, 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6, empty spot for a future 85mm f/1.8, business cards, CF cards, candy 🙂

If money were no object, what pieces of equipment would you own, and why?
Ah, that’s a tough question! I would definitely love to own every single lens and camera out there if that were the case. But in all honesty, I’m very happy with the camera I currently own. I would, however, really like the 85mm, 70-200mm, and a wide-angle lens. Oh, and definitely upgrade from my precious, little 50mm 1.8 🙂

If you had any advice for those just starting out, or just discovering the field, what would it be?
Learn your camera. REALLY learn it. Learn what every single function can do. I will personally say that I did not start charging for shoots until I really learned how to use my camera. I didn’t charge until I started creating the images I wanted. Don’t look at photography as a quick way to earn some money. If you have your heart set on becoming a photographer, truly learn your camera inside and out and practice, practice, practice! I can’t emphasize enough how important practicing is. Photograph anything and everything you see. Seriously, you will thank yourself later. Shoot, I practiced on random things I found in my home. Like a crystal bowl, a salt & pepper shaker, and Nala. If photography is what you want to do, learn your camera first.

To date, what is your favorite piece of equipment you own?
I absolutely adore my Canon 7D.

Who/what would your ideal subject be?
Anyone who wants crisp, clean, and fresh photographs! 🙂

Do you read any photography books? If so, which ones do you recommend?
The only photography book I own is a tips and tricks book about photography (which is pretty awesome). But I do most of my reading online.

What is a little known fact about yourself??
I love to play video games. A few games I love to play are Need for Speed, the Mario Brothers games, and… Madagascar Kartz. Yeah, so what if that last one is for kids! I love it 🙂 oh, and I’m kind of funny. At least I think so 🙂
